Trainer: Ralph Manning, Total stakes: $1,573,240

Already reknowned as a top horseman Ralph Manning (pictured with Seachange and strapper Jayne Ivil) proved his class guiding Seachange to seven Group One wins at three, four & five years
Dick Karreman’s champion racemare Seachange was born at The Oaks in 2002, arriving with a pair of front legs less than ideal for a future sales yearling. Despite the best efforts to correct her leg conformation, they were deemed not up to the standard required for inclusion in the studs Karaka yearling draft that year.
With the sales off the agenda, Seachange was left to grow-out at a natural pace, before being put into work as a 3YO with Cambridge trainer Ralph Manning.
Seachange showed immediate ability in her very first prep winning on debut in a mid-winter maiden at Paeroa. Her rider that day Gavin McKeon sensed here was a filly out of the ordinary and he made it his immediate business to visit Rick Williams at the stud soon after the win, making his high opinion of Seachange known and seeking a commitment for his continuation as the filly’s rider.
For Seachange’s owner Dick Karreman, racing manager Rick Williams, trainer Ralph Manning and jockey Gavin McKeon this was the beginning of an almost fairytale like journey where the one-time sales reject goes on to win seven Group One wins while racing in New Zealand, Australia, Dubai and England.
In winning on seven occasions at Group One level, Seachange also added to her stakes record placing on five further Group One occasions. The placings included both the Gr.1 VRC Myer Classic and Gr.1 MRC Futurity Stakes.
Rated as unlucky by the Australian press when not winning the Myer Classic, the only thing stopping Seachange adding Australian Group One wins to her record was the equine influenza which would have left her stranded were she to campaign there again.
Instead Seachange made her way on the international stage, venturing first to Dubai for the World Cup meeting and then on to the United Kingdom.
Her effort when sixth in the US$5 million Gr.1 Dubai Duty Free firmly cemented Seachange’s reputation as a world-class racemare. Finishing just 2.4 lengths from the winner Jay Peg, that years field included eleven international Group One winners. Jay Peg’s winning time of 1:46:2 for the 1770m established a new track record and Seachange’s own finishing time for sixth place was deemed to be fast enough to have won any of the past runnings of the Dubai Dutyfree.
On next to Great Britain under the care of her new trainer Graeme Sanders. Wet tracks foiled Seachange’s UK campaign causing her to go unplaced in the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes, before running a brave fourth in the Gr.1 Newmarket Falmouth Stakes. Her effort in the Falmouth Stakes over 1600m on an unsuitably wet track was widely praised by the British press.
