Fiddler’s stakes win in the $45,000 Listed Wanganui Guineas signals a good start for Keeninsky’s new season three year olds
SEPTEMBER 6TH 2010: With Keeninsky’s colts and fillies tipped as making lovely three year olds this season, Saturday’s listed win by Fiddler came as an early boost to the young sire’s supporters.
Bred by Waikato owner-breeder Ron Thompson from his stakes winning Brigade Of Guards mare Adonia, Fiddler took the Wanganui feature over 1340-metres in exciting fashion. The son of Keeninsky raced much in the same style as his sire is remembered for; leading from the outset, kicking clear in the straight and fighting doggedly to the line.
Finishing rapidly and running Fiddler to a nose second, was John Bary’s top colt Jimmy Choux, with Kevin Gray’s Cellarmaster back two lengths in third place. With Jimmy Choux the third top rated two year old last season and Cellarmaster heading the two year old free handicap, the win by Fiddler places him squarely amongst this season’s top spring stakes prospects.
Fiddler’s Matamata trainer Tony Gillies has always rated the horse highly, and successful jockey Sam Spratt rates him equally high, though she warns the gelding is “still very green.”

Keeninsky’s colts & fillies demonstrate good speed & good attitude!
AUGUST 2010: With the majority of Keeninsky’s first-crop progeny still yet to race, the feedback from trainers is encouraging, suggesting his colts and fillies show good speed and good attitude - and also that they’ll make lovely three-year-olds this season. The trainers spoken-with are happy to continue taking a patient approach, expecting their Keeninsky’s will mature into competitive sprinter-milers.
Keeninsky secured his second winner from just eight raceday starters when She’s Prestigious scored impressively at Ellerslie in March. Others to feature from his first crop are the Ellerslie winner Customised, his stakes placed filly Miss Curiosity, the stakes placed Botofogo (deceased), and Fiddler who ran a fast finishing 3rd at his only start with jockey Jason Waddell labelling him a lovely 3YO type.
She’s Prestigious does Peard proud
6th APRIL 2010: The Bruce Wallace trained She’s Prestigious (pictured on inside) added another winner for sire Keeninsky when taking out the DJ O’Sullivan Salver maiden 1200m for 2YO’s yesterday at Ellerslie.
She’s Prestigious with Craig Grylls aboard dashed clear at the jump putting two lengths on her opposition and held her lead to the turn fighting doggedly down the straight to hold out race favourite Red General.
Part owner and breeder Allan Peard was justifiably proud of his filly’s winning effort. “The jump probably won her the race, but she’s so tough and she refused to hand it over to Red General who was at her a long way out,” said a beaming Peard.
She’s Prestigious is one of three Keeninskys’ in work at Wallace’s Takanini stable, and the sire holds a special place in Peard’s riding career with the two having combined for Group One wins in both the Manawatu Sire’s Produce Stakes and the Telegraph Handicap.
She’s Prestigious gave Keeninsky his second winner from just eight raceday starters. Among his first crop to race are the stakes placed Botofogo (deceased), Robert Priscott’s recent impressive Ellerslie winner Customised, and Ralph Manning’s Miss Curiosity who placed in her first three starts before finishing a close-up fifth in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeder’s Stakes.
Keeninsky’s first winner Customised...stylish!
15th MARCH 2010: Keeninsky recorded his first winner when Dick Karreman’s 2YO filly Customised scored on debut in the $20,000 Gucci 1100at Ellerslie, for trainers Robert Priscott & Clayton Chipperfield.
Rider Mark Du Plessis was impressed with the filly’s winning effort and on return to scale made mention to Trackside commentator Tommy Hazlett of both Customised’s ‘wonderful temperament and turn-of-foot.’
Trekked south, Customised lined-up next in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sire’s Produce where an on-pace bias saw her finish unplaced. Trainer Robert Priscott rates the filly highly and intends targeting her towards the 3YO fillies stakes races.

Miss Curiosity stakes placed and another spring prospect for Keeninsky
The Ralph Manning trained Miss Curiosity (pictured - outside) showed herself to be another of Keeninsky’s first crop to impress. The filly showed immediate ability placing at her first three starts before finishing a close-up fifth behind Banchee and Sister Havana the Gr.2 Matamata Breeder’s
Stakes and stakes placing when 3rd in the Listed Champagne Stakes.
Manning reports the filly as an ideal spring type and is looking forward to seeing her over further distance.
An eye catching debut at the Waipa trials in late November, saw Apache Sky easily win her 650m heat by two lengths. The filly made her race debut at Ellerslie, on Boxing Day - slow to jump, she again showed exciting speed when she joined the leaders three wide in the running, before weakening.
This filly shows an abundance of natural speed, and now with Matamata trainer Mark Brosnan she could well mature into a quality 3YO type.
Keeninsky two year old Botafogo stakes placed at Trentham
Saturday 24th October 2009: Keeninsky’s talented juvenile Botafogo impressed both his trainer John Bary and jockey Michael Walker, with a game run for third behind Big River and Elle Tresor in Saturday’s Listed Wellesley Stakes at Trentham.
Walker who had ridden Botafogo in his two starts, predicted a ‘very bright future’ for the Keeninsky gelding, with Bary looking ahead towards the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Million race in January.
“He’s got real talent! said Bary. He is very fast, and he’s such a relaxed horse with a fantastic temperament.
“Mickey said ‘the horse is still green, but he’s learning fast, and expects the step-up next to 1200m will suit. We’re both excited about seeing him hit out on a good surface.”
November 2009: Sadly for trainer John Bary and owner Ivan Grieve, Botafogo was the victim of a freak trackwork accident in late November and had to be destroyed. Bary rues loosing the talented gelding who was something of a stable favourite, and to this day he still wonders just how fast Botafogo might have been having never had the opportunity to let him run along on a firm track surface.
Karaka 2009 – Keeninsky’s first-crop yearlings
Keeninsky’s first crop colts and fillies were in demand at this year’s Karaka sale. In a depressed yearling market it was encouraging to see his Select draft average a healthy $41,000, and his Festival draft average $16,500.
Of particular interest - Keeninsky’s two highest priced yearlings were bought by Australians, Aquanita Racing purchasing Lot 743 a colt from Proud Run and Mr Brent Spicer on behalf of Leon Corstons Melbourne stable purchasing Lot 928 a colt from Waverley Express.
The Keeninsky colts appeal to the Australian buyers can only be considered a compliment to the stallion given their own plethora of speed horses available locally.
Lot 743. Keeninsky – Proud Run (Runyon) colt
Purchased by Aquanita Racing (Melbourne) $50,000
Lot 928. Keeninsky – Waverley Express (Masterclass) colt
Purchased by Brent Spicer (Melbourne) $80,000
