Spring Champion Stakes hope is 'over the odds'

Edward Cummings, trainer of Spring Champion Stakes hopeful
Long Genes

Edward Cummings is adamant untapped talent Long Genes is over the odds in $2m Spring Champion Stakes at Royal Randwick as the Hawkesbury trainer prepares to put a two-state Group 1 double in his crosshairs this Saturday.

Cummings will have contenders in two majors across the east coast with stable star Duais down in Melbourne for the Cox Plate at The Valley.

Long Genes will lead Cummings assault in his home state when the emerging son of U S Navy Flag takes on 11 rivals in the Spring Champion.

TAB had bet as much as $51 for Long Genes to win the Spring Champion even before the final field but Cummings says he‘s a far better chance than that price would suggest.

Long Genes was doing his best work late when running home for seventh in the Gloaming Stakes last start.

"I think he is over the odds, he only got beaten less than two lengths in the Gloaming and the form out of that is always the main form heading into a Spring Champion," Cummings said.

"I thought it would be fair to say the horses finishing down the outside (in the Gloaming) where in the better ground on the day to be making that kind of run but we had to take the horse the path of least resistance I suppose.

"That was a bit of bad luck but he still finished very hard and put himself right in the frame for an improving run right into the Spring Champion now.

"He is out of a NZ Oaks winner and despite being by U S Navy Flag, there is plenty of stamina in the pedigree so 2000m should suit him."

Tyler Schiller will keep the ride on Long Genes, who has drawn in barrier 10.

Cummings is keeping the door open for Long Genes to run in two Group 1s in successive weeks with the Victoria Derby also a possibility after Saturday.

"It's definitely in the plan but we will have to see how he comes out of Saturday first," he said.

"He's on his sixth run this preparation, in his first prep, so we would be asking a lot of him but he does come across as a horse that loves his racing and he is getting better with each start."
