Blind Raise announced himself as a black-type horse in waiting with a dominant winning debut at Sandown Lakeside on Easter Monday, prompting trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young to plot a path towards the $175,000 Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m).
The Ace High gelding ($3.20) travelled sweetly behind the speed in a 2YO Open (1400m) under Beau Mertens before unleashing a devastating late burst to put 2-¼ lengths on Harry Met Sally ($8.50), with Melbourne Boy ($12) a further length adrift in third.
Busuttin admitted he was taken aback by how relaxed Blind Raise was in the mounting yard, particularly given his sire's reputation for producing hot-headed types.
"He'd trialled up like that at home but you always want to see them do it on race day," Busuttin said.
"He's very calm and very quiet, I'm surprised how calm he was saddling him up.
"The progeny can get a little hot – they've got plenty of ability, the Ace Highs, but they can get a bit wound up.
"He's been bombproof all the way through and the best part is that he's fast. He quickened up nicely so that's good."
Mertens was equally impressed, although his surprise centred more on the young gelding's explosive turn of foot.
"I didn't think he'd have the sprint and pick up as quick as he did today but he's just a professional," Mertens said.
"He goes about his business very well and he shows that in his racing.
"The whole time I've ridden him he's given no inkling of being a hot, high maintenance horse.
"Even today he paraded around the mounting yard with his head on his chest.
"The way he raced today he was very tractable and I could sort of push and pull back on him. He did what I wanted him to do and when he was ready to go he let rip."
As for Blind Raise's ownership group, Busuttin couldn't resist a cheeky swipe when asked about the celebrating syndicate.
"They're a pack of lunatics," he said.
"I've got some schoolmates in there and half-a-dozen idiots that have chimed in late from over here so they'll all be up and about."
Blind Raise, who hails from the famous Seachange family, was bred by The Oaks Stud and was sold through our Karaka 2025 Book 1 Draft for $70,000 to Busuttin Young Racing.
